Evidence Guide

Most refusals come down to
one thing — evidence quality.

The Department assesses the genuineness of your relationship across four categories. A strong file addresses all four clearly and consistently — not just one or two.

01

Financial

Joint accounts, shared expenses, co-signed leases or loans, named on each other's insurance policies, joint financial commitments.

02

Social

Statutory declarations from people who know you as a couple, photos together over time, social media, invitations and correspondence addressed to you jointly.

03

Household

Shared living arrangements, utility bills, lease agreements, council rates notices, evidence of cohabitation at the same address.

04

Commitment

Length of relationship, future plans together, knowledge of each other's personal circumstances, family, and background. Travel history as a couple.

The most common mistake

Submitting evidence that is voluminous but thin — lots of photos and not much financial or household documentation. The Department looks for depth across all four categories, not just quantity in one.

What personal statements must do

Tell the story of your relationship clearly and consistently. Inconsistencies between partners' statements — even small ones — raise red flags. We review both statements together before lodgement.
